Dissatisfied with the corporate world, I left Wall Street to start a new hotel brand. It was a lifestyle concept catering to adventure sport enthusiasts. A graduate of Cornell’s Hotel School and the School of Architecture at Columbia, I had worked closely on the business plan with some of the leaders of the hotel industry through Cornell. I thought fundraising for this venture should be a cinch, but I found myself in a tight spot: on the one hand, my immediate network of friends and family could not fund such large venture, and on the other hand, institutional real estate money was too unimaginative and would not fund a “niche" project like mine.
That’s when I hit on the idea for GroundBreaker. I knew the JOBS Act had the potential of changing how projects like mine got funded. I could now start a much wider campaign to get my project off the ground. However, there was no efficient and cost-sensitive way of doing it, at least not for a small entrepreneur like me. Now that I was on Main Street, I missed the tools I had back on Wall Street.
It turns out I didn’t only solve my problem, but that of tens of thousands of real estate developers and deal sponsors across the country. And so, here we are. This is GroundBreaker.
